Week 1

Today is our first online learning class with Mr Martin and Mr Fauzi at Zoom. Then, we were given an introduction of the module a short briefing about our first week exercise. We were introduced to Adobe Photoshop to learn the basic skills about the Photoshop like the selection tool, situration, contrast and brightness, colour matching and so on. Our first week exercise we need to post three favorite photoshop works, share experience of playing Bezier game and try photoshop Shazam and the Hearst Mansion.

My three favourite photoshop works :

I loved this pictures because when i first saw this, it reminds me to think that what you can do and what you want to do, try to work hard and you'll find a way.

This picture is full of imagination about the phone and the world. I like the smooth connection between the phone and road. This picture looks very cool to me and I liked the colour tone so much.

Amazing Photoshop artists with skills that will blow your mind

This picture reminds me to think about my childhood. The two persons in the picture are taking the moon and place it on the sky, just like they are decorating the night.

Bezier game :

figure 1
At first, I enjoyed the game and feel satisfying to draw all the lines. But after that, its actually challenging and test your skill. I've tried so many times to draw the curl to fit in the lines as well as to make it smoooth. However, I think this is helpful for us to train our skill by using pen tool, learn to be patient and pay attention on every details.

Week 2
This week we have two exercises, both are editing photos in Photoshop. All the material have provided in google drive. The first exercise is Hearst Mansion and second one is Ghost house exercise.

Hearst Mansion exercise :
We are require to edit ourselves into Hearst Mansion. In this exercise, I have learned how to use brush tool, quick selection tool, layers, and create reflection of an object that I've selected.

figure 1, Progress
Crop myself out and move into the Hearst Mansion bu using quick selection tool.

figure 2, Progress
Start to adjust the colour, saturation, brightness, fade and create shadow to make it believable as well as to do reflection on the floor.

Ghost house exercise :
We are require to move the house into the dark cloud and then select the ghost bride apply into it.

figure 1, The house

figure 2, The Dark Cloud

figure 3, Ghost Bride

Process :
figure 4, Progress
Mask the house by using quick selection tool. After that, drag it into the background image.

figure 5, Progress
Adjust the colour, brightness, saturation and fade to make it darker, to merge with the dark sky.

figure 6, Progress
After editing the house, copy the bride ghost into the background(sky) image. Go to the blending mode to choose "screen" effect to hide the black. Then, adjust the size, cut it by using pen tool to make it feels like the bride ghost is in the house. Lastly, create a new layer and use gradient effect.

Final outcome :

Week 3

This week lecture is about blending mode, double exposure effect and working with mask. Mr Martin provide us some pictures for practical session. Therefore, we started our exercises with Mr Martin, we have to use different blending mode to edit the pictures which is multiply mode, screen mode and soft light.

Class exercise :
1. Multiply mode - is a blending mode that will make the white colour become transparent and black colour will be shown.

2. Screen mode - is a blending mode that is opposite with the multiply mode which will the black will hide and white will show.

Practical work :
1. Cowboy
2. Recoloring
3. Write one paragraph of my conceptual (project 1- cyborg)
4. Creating Image Blending (composition)

Weekly exercise :
This week's practical work is to edit a cowboy, a house and a sunset and put it together into one image then adjust the hue/saturation or brightness to make it looks real.

Tutorial practical session : Creating Image Blending (composition)
Mr Fauzi provide all the images and objects that we need to used to create a collage work. he has show us the demonstration of create the composition and playing a round with blending mode. we are require to use as many as the picture that he has given to us to create our own composition.

Week 4

Lecture : layer mask (black to hide, white to show)
Today's lesson is about layer mask, its slightly different from last week exercise. As usual, Mr Martin provide the pictures for us to do our class exercises.

Class exercise :

Tutorial session :
1. Consultation of digital collage
Mr Fauzi gave us feedback and suggestion of our practical work (digital collage) we have made last week. The feedback that given by Mr Fauzi is my first collage is creative and the position of the buildings are very good and he likes the "jumping person" placing at the top left hand side.

For the second collage, is more on realistic and logical way, but this collage is very common that most of the people will have the same idea with this kind of logical way. Then. Mr Fauzi suggest me to combine these two composition and come out with the third one which is creative and logic.

Displacement map :
This is another exercise that is given by Mr Martin for us as a weekly exercise. We do many different exercise to improve our Photoshop skills.

 figure 8, progress
Change the colour to black and white and then apply gaussian blur of 5.0 to reduce the harsh lines on the fabric. Then save it as psd file.

figure 9, progress
Drah the flag onto the fabric and then covert it into a smart object. Next, go to filter, select distort > displace and choose the psd file that you have saved just now. Thus, select the blending mode "multiply" to blend within the two objects. In order to make the colour of the flag more brighter, duplicate the layer and apply blending mode "screen" and lower down it's capacity. Lastly, select quick selection tool to select the needed parts (flag).

Tutorial session :
This week tutorial has replaced to Saturday (16/05). Mr Fauzi gives us a brief of project 2 and asked us to do a composition exercise for us to practice before we start our project.

The three composition I have created :

Week 6 - Week 10

From week 6 onward, we started our project 2A&B and we are require to focus more on projects, so there is no new exercises within these weeks.

Week 7

There is no classes or consultation for both lecture ad tutorial due to public holiday. However, we will have class replacement with Mr Fauzi on Saturday (30 May 2020). We are having consultation for our exercises. All the feedback of our composition exercise will be given.

Here is the work I've consulted :

Week 8
We are having consultation of our Project 2B (photo manipulation) proposal with Mr Martin. We can start the project after we got the approval.

Here is the proposal of my project 2B - Photo manipulation.

Week 9

Same thing goes to this week, we have consultation with Mr Martin and the feedback is given during class.

Therefore for tutorial session, we are still having consultation for the same exercises as well. The exercise is important for us because this is a practice to help us have a clear concept of composition before we start our project 2A (self-titled). Since I have finish my exercise on week 7, so  I am allow to start my project 2A (self-titled).

Week 10

This week is the final submission for Project 2B (photo manipulation).

Tutorial session, we have introduction of Adobe After Effect and a demo video will be uploaded in google classroom as a guidance for our final project which is called surrealism digital photography. The main thing that are thought in the tutorial class is basically keyframe, composition and layer.

Week 11

From week 7 until week 14, we have done all the exercises and we all are focused on our final project. So, there are some simple extra practical session for week 11 which is about colour modulation.

First attempt :

figure 1, original picture
In this picture we can see that the colour tone is too warm.

figure 2, progress
adjusting the brightness, contrast, highlight etc.

figure 3, progress
adjusting the vibrance and saturation

The difference between vibrance and saturation.
  • Saturation simply increases the intensity of all colours simultaneously
  • Vibrance increases the intensity of muted colours so than already saturated colours

figure 4, final outcome

Second attempt :

figure 1, original picture
The original picture is too dark and the colour tone is cold. So we have to make it brighter and warm.

 figure 2, progress
after adjusting the colour tone, add gradient to create black border.

 figure 3, progress

figure 4, progress

figure 5, final outcome

Third attempt :

figure 1, original picture

 figure 1, progress
add gradient

 figure 2, progress
adjust colour contrast and colour exposure. I want it to have the focus on the women and the dog, so I increase the brightness on it and make the surrounding darker.

 figure 3, progress
adjust a little bit colour after apply gradient

figure 4, progress
Since the dog is a bit too dark, I add gradient on it to increase the brightness so that it has the contrast with the background.
